Location: San Rafael | Here's a breakdown of the sierra trip...
I picked up mike on Thursday morning in Ukiah. It was 102 degrees! we hit a couple of his standby spots anyway. We ended up seeing these...
an Oregon garter that dove into the pond, a pond turtle that dove into the creek, tons of rough-skinned newts and larva, and a few yellow legged frogs...
We needed to kill alot of time, so we explored a little. we poked around a stream for a while, was too hot for anything but a dip. we started our road cruise early and got a little red sided garter at the start of the road.
It finally started to get dark so we could get on with our cruise. we ended up getting a juvie cal king and a nice little gopher snake.
I guess I forgot to take pics of the king, as we ran into Al Wolf and Bonnie from Sonoma county reptile rescue.
we talked snake for a while. They had just been to an Oreganus den site and had a big beautiful Northern pacific rattlesnake in the bucket.
We finnished up our road cruise and got back to my place and crashed. Edgar met us at my place at 5:30 am on Friday. We had all only gotten a few hours sleep. we packed up and headed out. Got to the foot hills and it was RIPPING HOT! Poked around anyway. Found a few skinks, then headed to our meeting campground, only to find it full. We picked another spot, and went to find it, poking around for Zonata and boas along the way.
Well...we went snakeless on Friday.
Saturday morning we went back down the mountain to herp an abandoned house we'd seen on the way up. there was AC everywhere but it was really hot and dry.
I asked anyone who was listening, if there were Oreganus at that altitude, and a couple minutes later we got an answer as I flipped one under a lumber pile
Later on, back at camp. I went to the stream that was about 20 yards from my tent, to see about some snakes.
and flushed a little baby mountain garter, pretty much in our camping spot.
Edgar
We searched and searched for mt. kings and boas, off and on, all day to no avail. Then we hung out and waited for Chad and Ricky and Tracy to show up. It was getting dark when they showed up. After introductions,
we got down to having some fun. Everyone was really cool and we had a good time black lighting for bugs.
We attracted a beautiful sphinx moth right away. I'm sure Ricky will have some killer pics of the bugs. I t was slow buggin', but we had a blast!
Part 2, Sunday. We get our herp on!

She was my favorite looking oreganus of the year for sure...well...out of the 3 I've seen.
Thanks for posting!
I can't believe I had to go the entire trip without taking pictures. |
