So yesterday, we went out to Shasta Lake, and Billy flipped over a log, and he was freaked out cuz there were a bunch of spiders in it, then out of nowhere out comes a snake. So I jumped up and grabbed it as it started to swim away. It never tried to bite, but musked plenty. I believe it is a female, but not positive. We are arguing on the species that it is. I do not know much about wild snakes, sadly... so I was hoping to get a positive ID from you guys!

I dont have a photo yet, but its got brownish red eyes, red tongue with black tip, and a yellow stripe all the way down its body that starts with a diamond shape on its head. It has a solid gray belly, and a fainter yellow stripe along each side. It about the size of a young adult corn snake.

It looks like a common garter, but does not have any red on it.

Mountain Gartersnake most likely. Should post this in the field herping section. I'll move it there.

Yup it's mostly likely a Mountain garter. Thamnophis elegans elegans.

I agree - they are without a doubt the most common garter I encounter up here.
How often do you herp up here?

Here's a common garter from McCloud Arm:

Thamnophis sirtalis fitchi

The red isn't always immediately apparent but you probably would have noticed it.

Here's a Mountain from Redding:

Thamnophis elegans elegans
