I've never ID any T's that I've found, but I have found some on and near Diablo that looked like those ones. Now I have an idea what they are. Are there other species around the Bay Area?

I'm not familiar with those places, but given how close they are and the lack of natural boundaries, they could be. The genus Aphonopelma is currently under revision by Dr. Brent Hendrixson and won't be complete for many years. Until that happens, I've been labeling T's I find, Aphonopelma sp. "Location". So this one would be Aphonopelma sp. "Mt. Diablo".

I collected that female and immature male and CodeWilster (on AB) collected a female so we have a nice little breeding group.

Hey Kyle nice to see those pics. Here's that male (we still sure it's male?) and I'll see if I can dig up some more pics. I know I took several habitat shots...

Photobucket

By the way the female I have just molted. She actually looks much different than the male, almost green. I'm sure yours has molted by now too!

Yeah, mine molted too and looks that greenish color! Its interesting to see such sexual dimorphism in immature specimens. I'll get some pics of her up sometime.

I housed them in half-gallon containers filled about 9/10 the way full with some native soil and they seem to like it. They've dug some pretty interesting burrows!

Kyle.

Here's the recently molted female on the soil in which I'm keeping her. It matches her native soil pretty well.

Stick a twig down in there. If something grabs it, try to lure it to the surface. If you can see it, then you can pour a little bit of water down in there and he'll come right up. Just be sure you can actually SEE the tarantula otherwise you may be just wasting your water!
